I stood on the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama and looked up.

On March 7, 1965 — Bloody Sunday — John Lewis and six hundred marchers crossed this bridge on foot and were met with violence. They came back. They crossed again. What happened on this bridge changed America.

I didn't know exactly what I was looking for when I raised my camera. But the sunrise was coming through the steel lattice of the arch, centered perfectly, flooding through like something that couldn't be stopped. I called it A New Day because that's what it felt like. That's what it still feels like.

There are places in America that still carry the weight of what happened there. This bridge is one of them. I felt it the moment I stepped onto it.

Flowers tell stories
