The Story Behind the Work

Hazel Bodner is a fine art photographer, maker, and writer based in Tennessee. She holds degrees from Wesleyan College and Wake Forest University, and trained in fine art photography at the Southeastern School of Photography.

Her work has been juried into Slow Exposures, selected by National Geographic photographer Peter Essick, and displayed at the Atlanta Airport. She is a member of the International Magnolia Society and a former editor of Creative Arts Magazine.

Gardener

Each year I plant a perennial garden — zinnias, dahlias, iris, peonies, strawflowers, and whatever else catches my eye at the nursery. The garden feeds the photography. I am always watching for the next image, and it often starts right outside my door. Soon I will be planting on a Tennessee farmhouse property with room to grow everything I have ever wanted.

Creative

I am always making something. My Bernina sewing machine and I have an ongoing relationship — quilted bags, baby blankets, garments, and whatever the fabric suggests. I also knit, work in yarn, and spend significant time in Adobe Photoshop giving my photographs new lives. Creativity is not a hobby for me. It is how I think.

Writer

I started writing poetry at Wesleyan College and never really stopped. I write in the tradition of Emily Dickinson — slant, spare, and honest. Recently I began publishing on Substack — poems, book reviews, and occasional essays from a photographer who also reads too much. I hope you'll join me there.
