The John Roebling Suspension Bridge spans the Ohio River between Cincinnati, Ohio and Covington, Kentucky — painted in that unmistakable turquoise that stops you before you even know why. It stands directly in front of the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center.

Enslaved people crossed this river to freedom without the aid of any bridge. Through cold water and tremendous risk, they crossed anyway. I stood on this bridge and looked straight down the center — the latticed steel repeating into the distance like a cathedral, a yellow line leading toward the light — and I knew exactly what to call it.

Freedom is one of my most loved images. It has found homes with people who know Cincinnati, people who know American history, and people who simply stop when they see something that earns a second look. It earns one every time.

Flowers tell stories

It's amazing how so much detail shows up each Spring with such little work on our part. The display of color delights, but doesn't last long. It's my goal to catch the beauty each season.
