Wow

Sometimes a customer becomes something more. A woman who had purchased my work invited me to her farm in Rutledge, Tennessee — and what I found there stopped me completely.

This bloom was growing in the kind of quiet that only farms have. I shot it in black and white because color would have been a distraction. What I wanted was the light — the way it found those petals against the dark, the way the bloom seemed to be holding very still, as if it knew.

I called it Wow because that was the only word I had when I saw it. Sometimes that's enough.
