The Maze

Some gardens don't let you go easily. This one held me — a tulip magnolia in Marietta, Georgia, not far from my home, so full of buds that the branches wove into each other like a puzzle. Every direction offered another bloom, another angle, another reason to stay.

I named it The Maze because that's exactly what it felt like. You walk in looking for one photograph and emerge an hour later having found a dozen. The deep magenta against the bare grey branches is the color of early spring making its case — bold, insistent, completely sure of itself.

Most of my magnolia work is intimate — one bloom, close in. This is the whole argument at once.
